Standard Knitting Abbreviations
- k = knit [the most used stitch]
- p = purl [the 2nd most used stitch]
- tbl = through back loop (suffixed to k or p)
- wyif = with yarn in front
- wyib = with yarn in back
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- st st = stocking (stockinette) st [also rev st st – reverse stocking (stockinette) st] – alternating knit and purl rows¹
- g st = garter st – knit (or purl) all rows²
- sl x = slip x st(s) [slip purlwise unless otherwise stated]
- ssk = slip, slip, knit [slip knitwise twice, insert left needle through fronts of sl sts, and knit] A form of decrease.
- skp = slip, knit, pass sl st over k st [slip 1 st knitwise, k1, pass sl st over k st] A form of decrease.
- kxtog = knit x sts together. A form of decrease.
- pxtog = purl x sts together. A form of decrease.
- psso = pass slipped stitch over. A form of decrease. (see also skp)
- mx = make x st(s) A form of increase.
- kfb = knit into front and back of st. A form of increase.
- pfb = purl into front and back of st. A form of increase.
- yo = yarn over. A form of increase.
- CO = cast on
- BO = bind (cast) off (British patterns usually use “cast off” rather than “BO”
- Cx = cable x st(s) – suffixes : L, R, F, or B (left, right, front or back) [L & F are the same. R & B are the same.]
- rem = remaining
- foll = following
- alt = alternate
- beg = beginning
- cont = continue
- incl = including
- RS or WS = right side or wrong side of work (this is usually indicated in the pattern)
- mb = make bobble
- MC or CC = Main colour or Contrasting Colour
